Darkening skies o'er a ship by the shore
Straining to carry him east on the wind
He held his Kate in a loving embrace
She wiped the tears from her face

Bound by the call of the cause he was torn
Swore to return to her soon as he could
On Newfoundland shores they again would be one
Soon as his duty was done

Outward he sailed to the gathering storm
Feeling his rifle so cold to the touch
Shipside the white horses tumble and fall
Faintly he heard Katy call

Roar ye winds westerly
Roll ye wide ocean
But Lord, keep him safely I pray
And bring back my Malcolm to Newfoundland's shore
And we'll be united someday

Letters for him to receive from afar
Never too far from the shores of her heart
Face to the wind she would head out each night
With only her faith and a light (she'd call)

Roar ye winds westerly
Roll ye wide ocean
But bring him back safely I pray
Lord, I have faith you will shelter his life
So on Newfoundland's shore he will make me his wife

(Inst)

Weeks then somre months passed but nary a word
Years and then decades her hair coarse and grey
Tears filled the eyes that searched east for her beau
Still to the shoreline she'd go (and cry)

Roar ye winds westerly
Roll ye wide ocean
Send me a sign Lord, I pray
You've taken care of the love of my life
Or on Newfoundland shore I will wait
'Til you take me away.........

Just before dawn down on Newfoundland's shore
Locals say out 'tween horizon and tide
You might see Katy still waitin' for Mal
Or could be a trick of the light
